U.S. District court ordered Google to comply with a request of FBI and to provide personal information to its users, although the claim was previously defined as unconstitutional. The Judge rejected Google’s argument that so-called “National Security Letters” violates constitutional rights. According to the court decision, Google is ordered to hand federal agents personal information about its US customers. The order is surprising in the light of discrepancy with a similar case in March in which the same judge said such demands violate the right of free speech. The court’s ruling doesn’t reveal what type of information FBI wants to obtain. It was also unclear whom the government was targeting.
The final decision of the case will be taken by the US Circuit Court but till then Google is supposed to defer with FBI demands, unless the federal agents do not follow the proper procedure for obtaining information. The court decision sparked anger against the government for exceeding his powers and violation of privacy in the name of national security.
Google could appeal the decision but for now the company declined comments.
