Linux Foundation joins forces with leading technology companies such as Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, IBM, VMware, Big Switch Networks, Brocade, Citrix, Microsoft, Arista Networks, NEC, Red Hat and others in creating an open platform for the organization of work in Software Defined Networking (SDN).
Each one of the companies will contribute software code, engineers, and millions of dollars to the joint effort for the project, called OpenDayLight, as the final specifications of the code will be determined by steering committee, which includes members the companies. The main idea adopted by the group is to create an open platform any developer can build on and anyone can contribute to.
The SDN platform allows to reduce costs of companies for databases, provides complex software, creates new applications and can contribute to improve network performance.
The project is a strong evidence that the industry acknowledges the benefits of establishing an open, reference framework for programmability and control through an open source SDN solution.
