New Ordinance Introduces European Requirements for Use of Food AdditivesFrom February 13, 2015 enters into force Ordinance № 4 of February 3, 2015 requirements for use of food additives, aiming harmonizing national legislation with the Regulation (EC) № 1333/2008 of the European Parliament and the Council.

Regulation harmonizes the use of food additives in foods in the Community.
„Food additive” means any substance not normally consumed as a food in itself and not normally used as a characteristic ingredient of food, whether or not it has nutritive value, the intentional addition of which to food for a technological purpose in the manufacture, processing, preparation, treatment, packaging, transport or storage of such food results, or may be reasonably expected to result, in it or its by-products becoming directly or indirectly a component of such foods.”

The Regulation contains a list of substances that are not considered as food additives. The Ordinance also implements into the Bulgarian legislation and the Lists with approved additives, enzymes, flavorings and nutrients used in foods as well as their conditions of use contained respectively in Regulation (EC) № 1129/2011 Regulation (EC) № 1129/2011 and Regulation (EC) № 1130/2011.
